An embossing stamp — also called an embosser or blind embossing stamp — works by pressing two plates together through a sheet of paper, raising the design as a tactile relief without any ink. The result is a subtle, sophisticated impression that catches the light and signals quality through touch as much as sight. It is a finishing technique used in luxury stationery, bookbinding, leather goods, and high-end packaging.

Blind embossing is particularly effective on heavyweight cotton or uncoated stocks, where the impression holds firmly and the raised surface has maximum definition. Embossing Stamp vs Wax Seal Stamp — Which Do You Need?

These are two distinct tools that create two very different effects. A custom wax seal stamp presses into molten sealing wax to create a coloured medallion — visible and tactile, traditionally used to seal envelopes. A custom embossing stamp creates a dry, ink-free raised impression directly in paper — no wax, no colour, entirely about texture and dimension.

Many couples and designers use both: the embossing stamp for a discreet monogram on the front of an invitation card or envelope flap, and a wax seal stamp for the envelope closure. They are complementary tools within a considered stationery suite, not alternatives to each other.

Our Embosser Formats

Paper Alchemy offers two plate configurations for our custom embossing stamps:

Round — 43mm plate (artwork up to 40mm): the classic format for monograms, crests, circular logos, and typographic seals. Suits couples, individuals, and businesses with a circular or symmetrical design. The round format is the most versatile for stationery applications.

Rectangle — 50×30mm plate (artwork up to 47×27mm): ideal for landscape logos, multi-line text, business names with a wordmark, and designs where the horizontal format is important. Suits corporate and professional branding as well as couples who prefer a landscape orientation.

Both formats are housed in the same stainless steel mechanism with an authentic brass seal plate, ensuring the same quality of impression regardless of shape. The mechanism is desk-mounted and operated with a single squeeze — no excessive force required for stocks up to 200gsm.

Plate Specifications and Design Space

The brass seal plate is where your design lives. Our plates are precision-engraved to your submitted artwork, producing a mirror-image relief that translates into a correctly-oriented embossed impression on paper. Design space within the round format is 40mm diameter; within the rectangle, 47mm × 27mm.

Artwork requirements: supply your design as a vector file (AI, EPS, or high-resolution PDF) where possible. Raster files (JPEG, PNG) are accepted at 300dpi minimum at the intended print size. Our designers review all artwork for emboss-readiness and will advise if any refinements are needed — fine lines under 0.5mm and very small text below 6pt may not reproduce cleanly in the emboss process.

Orientation options include portrait, landscape, or diagonal layout within the available plate space. Discuss your preferred orientation with our team at the time of inquiry.

Paper Weight Guide — What Stocks Work Best

Embossing works across a wide range of paper weights, but heavier stocks produce a crisper, more defined impression. Stocks between 120gsm and 200gsm are ideal — this covers the full range of premium invitation papers, writing papers, and cardstock used in PA’s stationery suites. Thinner stocks (under 80gsm) can tear or distort under the embossing pressure and are not recommended.

Uncoated and textured stocks hold embossed detail better than coated or glossy papers, where the surface coating can restrict the impression depth. Cotton-content papers (such as high-end invitation stocks) produce a particularly satisfying emboss — the fibres compress cleanly and hold the raised detail with exceptional clarity.

How to Order Your Custom Embosser

Step 1 — Submit your artwork and brief. Get in touch via our contact page with your design file, preferred plate format (round or rectangle), and any notes on orientation or design intent.

Step 2 — Design review and proof. Our team reviews your artwork for emboss compatibility and prepares a digital proof showing how your design will look on the plate. Any refinements are discussed and resolved before production.

Step 3 — Approval. You sign off on the proof. No stamp enters production without your confirmation.

Step 4 — Production and delivery. Your embosser is assembled with the custom-engraved brass plate and dispatched to you in Australia. Allow approximately 2–3 weeks from proof approval to delivery. Express production may be available — enquire at the time of ordering.

How to Use Your Embossing Stamp

Position your paper or card centrally over the lower plate of the embosser. Squeeze the handles firmly and evenly until the plates meet fully, then release. Lift your paper to reveal the raised impression. For consistent results on multiple sheets, mark the paper position with a light pencil guide or use the embosser’s built-in paper guide if available.

The embossing stamp is a hand-operated tool — no power, no ink, no consumables required beyond paper. A single stamp will last for tens of thousands of impressions when used as directed on paper stocks within the 200gsm limit.

What file format do I need to supply for my embossing stamp design?

Vector files are preferred: Adobe Illustrator (AI), EPS, or high-resolution PDF with outlines. These formats preserve the clean edges that translate into precise brass engraving. If you only have a raster file (JPEG or PNG), supply it at 300dpi or higher at the intended stamp size and our team will assess it for engraving suitability. For hand-drawn designs or custom lettering, a high-resolution scan works well as a starting point — our designers will trace and refine the artwork as needed. There is no additional charge for standard file preparation; complex artwork redrawing may be quoted separately.

Can I use my embossing stamp on envelopes?

Yes. Our embossers handle paper stocks up to 200gsm, which covers the full range of PA’s premium euro flap envelopes. The most common application is a monogram or return address emboss on the back flap of a C5 or C6 envelope. Position the envelope flap centrally over the plate, squeeze firmly, and release. For best results, test on a spare envelope before committing to your full suite quantity. The embossed impression is subtle and elegant on envelopes — it catches light at an angle and adds a tactile quality that printed text cannot replicate.

How is an embossing stamp different from a debossing stamp?

Embossing raises the design above the paper surface; debossing presses it below the surface. Paper Alchemy’s custom stamp tool embosses — the design is raised toward you when you hold the paper. Both effects are achieved using similar tooling; the distinction is which plate is the raised master and which is the recessed counter. If you have a specific preference for debossing (a sunken impression) rather than embossing, please note this at the time of inquiry and our team will confirm whether this is achievable with the current mechanism.
